We’re making improvements to the transport network around Stratford Primary School.

These changes aim to develop a network that’s safer for our families to travel to and from school, and other key destinations in Stratford.

This project has been in the pipeline for a number of years as part of our school safety improvements and was included as part of the 2023 Transport Choices Programme when that funding became available. This project uses feedback received from the Transport Choices Programme to deliver updated design options to suit the current and future needs of our community.

Thanks to everyone who provided feedback on our safety improvement plans for Stratford Primary School and the surrounding neighbourhood. Follow this project to stay up to date.

We're working on the courtesy crossing on Portia Street - starting with the western side of the crossing.

While this work is underway we need to close off access to the footpath and some parking spaces. This includes the laneway between Portia Street and Stratford Primary School (between the hockey turf and Wai o Rua - Stratford Aquatic Centre). Signage will be in place directing people around the work site safely.

Pedestrian access and some parking will be opened during the weekend while work is not in progress.

We expect the construction of the courtesy crossing to take 2 weeks, weather dependent.

We appreciate everyone's patience while we work to make our transport network safer for all users.

If you have any questions, please get in touch with us.

Work will soon begin on the new roundabout at the intersection of Brecon Road and Regan Street.

We have contracted Fulton Hogan to carry out the construction work and this is due to begin on 1 September 2025.

The work will be completed in stages:

    1. Construct the new central island on Regan Street and kerbing at the intersection. This is expected to take at least 5 weeks.

    2. From mid-October, pre-reseal repairs will be carried out on Regan Street from the Brecon Road intersection to Hamlet Street.

    3. Once Regan Street is resealed in early November (weather dependent), the small roundabout will be installed at the Brecon/Regan intersection

To complete this work safely, traffic management plans will be in place at different stages of the work. During any road closures, residents will still have access to their homes. Due to the nature of the work and the site location please expect some small delays travelling through the work site/detours.

Residents within the area will receive a letter with this detail and any important updates on the work will be shared through the Antenno App and further letter drops.

We appreciate your patience throughout this period. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us, or talk to the friendly team on site.

What about the Portia Street courtesy crossing?

We'll provide another update with construction timeframes for the Portia Street safety improvements soon.

We invited feedback on the proposed changes during March 2025 and 22 people provided their thoughts.

Much of the feedback received related to the loss of parking associated with the proposed pedestrian refuge crossing along Regan Street, mid-block between Oswald Place and Brecon Road, particularly during after-school activities at the nearby school’s playing field. As a result of the survey results, Officers recommended to Council that this feature be removed from the project plans.

Of the 3x roundabout options proposed at the Regan Street/Brecon Road intersection, Option 2 was recommended.

Of the 2x options provided for the pedestrian courtesy crossing adjacent to Wai o Rua - Stratford Aquatic Centre, Option 2 was recommended.

Elected Members discussed the feedback received and reviewed the recommendations at the April Policy and Services Committee meeting (you can see the Agenda for this meeting here) After deliberation, Elected Members approved the implementation of the following safety improvements. What are we proposing?

We’ll be focusing on the streets surrounding Stratford Primary School. This work will take place on Regan Street, Brecon Road and Portia Street.

Work is proposed to start in May 2025, but we’d like to hear from you before finalising the plans.

    Proposed changes:

    • Mini round-a-bout at the Brecon Road/Regan Street intersection (3 options to consider)

    • Refuge crossing for pedestrians on Regan Street between Oswald Place and Brecon Road

    • Courtesy crossing for pedestrians on Portia Street between Wai o Rua – Stratford Aquatic Centre and the Hockey Turf (2 options to consider)

We’ve worked hard to limit the impact this project has on parking, but improvements in our transport network will result in some on-street parking being removed to develop crossing points.

Please take a look at our plans available on this page and share your thoughts using the feedback form below.

We need to know how the plans will impact people using this part of the transport network, so we can determine the preferred options and finalise our designs.

What do you like and dislike about the proposed changes, and why? We want to make sure we work with you to get the best results for our community.
