Why is this work necessary?

The existing water main on Craig Street has experienced multiple bursts in recent years, causing disruptions to water service. The pipe has reached the end of its service life and full replacement is necessary to ensure reliable water supply to homes and businesses.

How long will the project take?

The construction is expected to take approximately 2 Months, starting in early September 2025 with completion by late October 2025, weather permitting.

Will my water supply be affected?

If you live on Craig Street or Titania Street, yes, there will be temporary water shutdowns required while connections are switched from the old main to the new main. You will receive at least 48 hours notice before any planned water shutdowns. Most shutdowns will be limited to a few hours during the working day.

Is there any health risk associated with the removal of the old asbestos cement pipes?

No. The removal of asbestos cement pipes will be carried out by qualified contractors following strict safety protocols and regulatory requirements. Wet cutting methods and appropriate containment procedures will be used to ensure there is no risk to public health.

Will I still be able to access my property during construction?

Pedestrian access to properties will be maintained at all times. Vehicle access may be restricted at times, but the contractor will work with residents and businesses to minimise disruption and provide alternative arrangements where needed.

Will the road be closed during construction?

Traffic management will be in place during construction. It will be minimal except when work extends onto State Highway 3, where additional controls may be required for safety. Lane closures or traffic controls may be used as needed, but full road closures are not expected for this project. Any temporary closures or changes to traffic flow will be clearly communicated in advance to minimise disruption.

What hours will construction take place?

Construction will generally occur Monday to Friday between 7:00am and 6:00pm. Work outside these hours will only occur with prior approval from Council and will be communicated with stakeholders.

Who do I contact if I have concerns during the construction?

The project has a dedicated contact person, Frank Hick, who can be reached at Fhick@stratford.govt.nz or Sam Jiggins Sjiggins@stratford.govt.nz
