We're giving some love to the heart of Stratford, by making upgrades to Prospero Place - our town centre.
This is a key project in our Long Term Plan (LTP) with the redevelopment working towards our vision of a Welcoming, Inclusive, Safe community – Te Pūmanawa o Taranaki (translated to the beating heart of Taranaki).
The Future of Broadway project aims to create vibrant public spaces and enhance safety, accessibility, and cultural identity - focusing on these key areas:
Community – transforming Prospero Place into a lively community hub, fostering social interaction and engagement
Connect – improve connectivity between Broadway and Miranda Street, creating a welcoming environment for people to support local businesses, attend events and access surrounding destination areas like the sporting complexes in King Edward Park.
Celebrate – Promote our cultural and historical identity, acknowledging tangata whenua, our unique Shakespearean heritage and reinforcing our natural surroundings. Integrate public art, wayfinding signage, and green spaces to enhance the town’s character.
Safety – improve lighting along Broadway between the roundabouts, installing modern energy efficient lights that both enhance the look and feel of our town centre as well as meets Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) standards.
Sustainability – Implement sustainable and best-practice design principles.
Background
Towards the end of 2016 we launched Stratford 2035 – Making it Real, which was an integrated approach to Stratford’s long term future. This included the Future of Broadway project, focusing on the revitalisation of Prospero Place and Broadway.
Over subsequent years, the project has changed in scope due to changes in land use in the area, such as the demolition of the ANZ bank and land next to Prospero Place becoming available. More recently, concept plans have been drawn up to determine the best use of Prospero Place and surrounding town centre areas. We're now at the stage of bringing the concept plans for Prospero Place to life through detailed designs that reflect the changes in the way that the space is used by our community. We aim to start physical works during the 2025/26 summer months.
We're really excited about getting to work on improving Prospero Place and hope you are too!

Kia ora Kathleen, thanks for your question and suggestions. While those points are not directly part of the Prospero Place upgrades, the overall image of our main street is certainly top of mind for the wider Future of Broadway project. Your suggestions have been shared with the project team for consideration. Regarding the building facades, the maintenance of those is the responsibility of building owners. We know our town centre needs some TLC and we’re excited to be on the journey, but many of the changes will be dependent on funding availability and may take some time. We’ll continue to share updates as and when they’re available, and please do keep the suggestions coming!

Kia ora, the conceptual design allows for an area of Prospero Place to be multi-functional, meaning it could be used for entertainment and other activities, as well as being a nice spot to sit and watch the world go by. This space is currently at the south east section of the grassed area, near the existing viewing area of the Glockenspiel. Because these are just drafts, we’re still fine-tuning details and Elected Members will have input on what final draft design goes out to the public for comment later in May. We’d be keen to hear from people if they’d like to see a raised platform, a stage, as you suggest, so have added a quick poll to the project page (see link below). Please take a look and choose an option, and share it with friends and family!

Thank you for your question! Sustainability is an important part of our approach, and we've included specific requirements in the contract for designers to consider the full lifecycle of the materials they select. Our goal is to use products that are durable and require minimal maintenance. Of course, all materials have a limited lifespan, and part of our role is to ensure they are maintained effectively and efficiently, without incurring excessive costs. We’ve taken on board your comment about the Library paint needing a spruce up and will consider that as part of our maintenance schedule.
Future of Broadway - Prospero Place is part of our wider Stratford 2035 - Making it real vision, which was first introduced in 2016.
The project's budget is $1.2 million and will be delivered across the first 3 years of the Long Term Plan 2024-34. Year 1 (2024/25) is focused on detailed design.

Timeline
Design concepts developed
Future of Broadway - Prospero Place has finished this stage
Over the last few years we’ve worked with planners to determine the best use of Prospero Place and surrounding town centre areas.
Concept plans have been developed and prioritise opening up our town centre, creating connections between our key destination areas and Broadway.
Prospero Place is what we’re focusing on at the moment, and in late 2024 we started working with landscape architects to develop our original concept plans into detailed designs.
Draft designs developed
Future of Broadway - Prospero Place has finished this stage
Using draft landscaping designs, we're talking with neighbouring businesses and organisations who will be directly affected by the redevelopment of Prospero Place.
Detailed designs

Using feedback from key stakeholders we’ll be fine tuning the draft designs and sharing them with Elected Members for review. These detailed designs will then be shared with the community for their comments.
Community feedback on detailed designs
Future of Broadway - Prospero Place is currently at this stage
During this period we'll be asking the community to share any comments they have on the detailed designs. This feedback will go to Elected Members to help them make their final decision on the design of Prospero Place.
